Kelabu: A Modern Display Font for Creative Branding

There’s something oddly satisfying about starting a new branding project with a blank canvas. I recently found myself staring at a fresh brand board, trying to find the right visual language for a boutique skincare line. The client wanted something clean, approachable, and slightly playful — not too serious, but still professional enough for their target audience. That’s when I stumbled upon Kelabu, a modern and casual looking display font that immediately caught my eye.

A Fresh Look for a Contemporary Brand

Kelabu has this effortless charm that feels both stylish and down-to-earth. It’s a display font with a subtle personality — not overly ornate, but definitely not boring. Its curves are gentle, almost like a whisper rather than a shout. This makes it incredibly versatile, especially for logos or headlines where you want to stand out without overwhelming the viewer.

I tested Kelabu on a few logo drafts for the skincare brand. One version used it as the main typeface for the brand name, paired with a minimalist sans-serif for supporting text. The contrast worked well, creating a balance between creativity and clarity. The softness of Kelabu gave the brand an inviting feel, which aligned perfectly with the product’s natural and nurturing message.

Testing Kelabu in Real-World Applications

Fonts don’t always behave the same way across different mediums, so I made sure to test Kelabu in various scenarios. On a packaging mockup, it looked great on a product label — crisp and legible even from a distance. When placed on a business card, it felt just right: not too bold, not too small. It had presence without being overbearing.

On social media, Kelabu performed exceptionally well. Whether it was a hero section on a website or a caption on an Instagram post, it maintained its character without losing readability. It wasn’t one of those fonts that looks amazing on screen but falls apart when printed. Kelabu stayed consistent across digital and physical formats, which is a big plus for any designer working on multi-channel branding.

In a poster design, I used Kelabu as the headline text. The font’s rhythm and spacing made it easy to read from afar, and the overall layout felt cohesive. I also tried it in a magazine layout for a feature article, using it for subheadings. It added a touch of modernity without clashing with the serif body text.

When to Use (and Avoid) Kelabu

Kelabu shines as a display font or headline font. It’s perfect for short phrases, logotypes, and anything where you want to make a statement. However, it might not be the best choice for long blocks of body text. At smaller sizes, the subtlety of its curves can become less readable, especially in dense paragraphs.

If your project requires a more formal tone, such as a corporate identity for a financial institution or legal firm, Kelabu might not be the best fit. But for creative industries — like fashion, music, art, or lifestyle brands — it’s a fantastic option. It adds a modern edge while keeping things approachable.

Font Pairing and Practical Tips

One of the best things about Kelabu is how well it pairs with other typefaces. For a balanced look, I paired it with a clean sans-serif font like Montserrat for body text. The contrast helped emphasize the brand name while keeping the rest of the content easy to read.

If you’re going for a more elegant look, consider pairing it with a serif font like Playfair Display. The combination works well for editorial designs or luxury packaging. Just be mindful of the weight and spacing to ensure the two fonts complement each other rather than compete.

Before committing to Kelabu in a final project, I recommend testing it in real conditions. Print a sample, view it on different screens, and check how it scales. Also, make sure to review the font’s licensing terms — especially if you plan to use it in commercial projects, templates, or print-on-demand products.

Finally, don’t forget to explore the included styles and alternates. Some versions of Kelabu may offer ligatures or swashes that can add extra flair to your designs. These subtle details can elevate a project from good to exceptional.

Kelabu is a modern display font with a friendly yet refined aesthetic. Whether you're designing a logo, a poster, or a brand identity system, it brings a sense of calm confidence to your work. As long as you use it thoughtfully and pair it well, it can be a powerful tool in your typography arsenal.
